Somewhere in the Caribbean

Jill Moss likes to travel as much as the next person, in fact, perhaps more than the next person. But she would prefer not to risk her life when she goes somewhere.

Neil Bryant is no stranger to danger and actually pays it very little attention. He has a good idea what his destiny is and believes that he's going to be here for a while, wherever "here" is. As a leading archaeologist studying Meso-American and Caribbean cultures and ruins, he often finds himself in unsavory situations. Since his niece, Jill, is frequently his go-to person when he needs a hand, she sometimes ends up on some pretty shaky ground too, from time to time.

The fabled Indigo Beach is one of those places that no one know is there until it's too late to escape. Not that you'd want to, since it is fabulous – icing sugar sand, turquoise seas, gentle breezes making the palm fronds sway – until something happens and it doesn't feel quite so idyllic.

Indigo Beach is the third book in the Jill Moss Adventures series. Book one, Picking up the Pieces and book two, The Glass Dolphin, are available from Amazon.com, Amazon.ca, Kindle, and Smashwords as well as other e-book sellers.

Beach heaven

There is something strange going on at the home of Jeffrey Walsh, media tycoon and owner of the secluded private retreat named Caranday.

As an artist specializing in portraits of every kind, it's not unusual that I am commissioned to create a portrait of someone's most prized possession – their home.

As the story of Indigo Beach begins, my portrait commission to create several views of Caranday for Mr. Walsh seems like a working vacation made in heaven. But things are not always what they seem.

Watch for Indigo Beach, the new novel in Jill Moss Adventures, coming soon.

Neil Bryant is a pre-eminent Mesoamerican archaeologist usually found trekking through steaming jungles and brushing dirt off ancient artifacts.

So what is he doing underwater? In the upcoming third novel in Jill Moss Adventures series, Neil's friend and Caribbean treasure-hunter, Quentin McSweeney, needs help and calls in Neil, Jill and the rest of the team.

The new title is Indigo Beach. Where is it? And what has McSweeney found? Stay tuned.

Travel Hacking

PictureLas Vegas Airport taken from plane window.
Wendy here. (You know, the author.)

It's no secret that I love to travel. There is a big world out there and I aim to see as much of it as I can. Part of my goal in creating Jill Moss Adventures is to connect with others who love travelling, love to read good books, and love knowing more about God's world - the natural one and the spiritual one. But that's another topic.

Today I came across a blog post that gives some great tips on travelling for less.

PictureFabulous view of Fort Lauderdale airport from the shuttle bus.
Before I give you that link, let me just say that my recent trip to Florida cost me $118.00 CAD to fly from Vancouver, B.C. to Fort Lauderdale. Yes, and back!

How did I do that?  Frequent flyer miles. Here is the link:  FLY.

What's your idea of excitement?

This big fellow reminded me to the song from Peter Pan that says, "Never smile at the crocodile...Don't be taken in by his welcome grin."

Well, you get the idea. This one is actually an alligator and the photo was taken last month in Florida – without a telephoto lens. (Apparently, they prefer toy poodles...)

When it comes to excitement, I prefer the tamer varieties. You know, like finding the perfect shoes, on sale. Or, standing back and surveying a painting I've just spent many hours creating and knowing that it's perfect.

My uncle, Neil Bryant, however, usually has other ideas about excitement. In our story, Picking up the Pieces, for example, he had me racing around several countries keeping only one or two steps ahead of some pretty nasty characters with equally nasty intentions (not to mention that they carried guns).

When we went in search of The Glass Dolphin, my acquaintance with the jungles of Peru far outstripped my desire to experience that kind of excitement. But, a woman's got to do what a woman's got to do. So, my kind of excitement turns out to be whatever God puts in my path.

Never a dull moment!

The Society of Everyday Adventurers is for anyone who wants to get more from everyday life by connecting with other people who love to travel, love God and love creativity.

Plans are still taking shape for the SEA, so now is the time to join the mailing list to learn about what's coming up. Use the form on the home page to sign up.

Some of the events and programs we have in mind include retreats, research travels, painting
workshops, culinary retreats, group travel, writers' retreats, beaches, and much more that we're still exploring. As more Jill Moss Adventures books come out, we may look at interactive story boarding, too, where the Society of Everyday Adventurers actually helps create the plots. I'm not sure how that will look but it sounds like fun.

Please leave a comment below and let us know what would interest you if you could just squeeze a little more adventure into your life. I'm not talking about scaling glaciers or trekking across continents here, just injecting small adventures into life to up the excitement.

Our goal is to create programs and events that add joy, deepen your spiritual life, and increase your fun.
For the mug, above, and lots more cool products, visit the SEA store HERE.

What is "adventure" anyway?

When you hear the word "adventure" do you think of trekking through steaming jungles, climbing mountains, or sailing solo around the world? While those things are indeed adventurous, a different

My definition of adventure is doing something that makes you uncomfortable but will ultimately produce growth.

For example, starting a business is an adventure - a trek into unknown territory. Writing a book or taking up painting can be an adventure. Learning to dance the tango, or travelling to Brazil? Both adventurous, wouldn't you say?

The important thing is to do what you are interested in doing and don't allow fear or naysayers to stop you. Life can be an adventure to a boring string of miserable days. The choice is yours.

Don't Stand Under a Coconut Palm

My idea of a good adventure is to read a good book, depending on the season, either curled up by the fire or lounging on a beach. But when my archaeologist uncle, Neil Bryant, decides he needs me to help out with his latest caper into the wilds of the past, I've been known to drop everything and go.

Being a dedicated comfort-lover, I've discovered that there is a lot to learn when you go charging off into the unknown. Not only is it important to keep your wits about you – that means eyes and ears on the alert at all times – it's also vital to learn what you can about your surroundings from as many sources as possible. If the locals don't stand under coconut palms, for example, that's a good clue that you shouldn't either. If the water looks inviting but no one is diving in, you need to find out why. Sharks, perhaps?

Come to think of it, this attitude applies to other areas of life, too, doesn't it?

I've learned a lot about being intrepid. You can read how in Picking up the Pieces, and now in my new escapade, The Glass Dolphin. (Click on titles for Amazon.com)

In Picking up the Pieces, I went to Sugarloaf Key in Florida and to Key West.

Here is a view from the island highway which hopscotches from key to key.

My next adventure will take me to this same area since Mr. McSweeney announced in The Glass Dolphin that he has found a wreck and insists that Neil and I take a look. I'll be packing my snorkel and flippers for this one.
